Bilateral meetings to strengthen ties with the EU

Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister Gahr Støre had bilateral meetings with EU Commissioners and Members of the European Parliament in Brussels on 22 November. He also met with HR Javier Solana.

15/02/2006 :: Gahr Støre met with Margot Wallström, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy. The discussion centred amongst other around the REACH legislation.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also met with the Commissioner for Enlargement, Ollie Rehn, to discuss the forthcoming enlargement of the EU with Romania and Bulgaria. They also deliberated over the status of the West-Balkans and Turkey.

“The work EU put into the development of these candidate countries, confirms the significant role the Community plays in Europe”, Gahr Støre stated to the press after the meeting. He underlined that especially the civil agenda the EU promotes, is of great importance to these communities.

In a meeting with the Secretary General for the European Council and High Representative CFSP Javier Solana, peace and reconciliation, especially in the Middle-East, were discussed. The future elections in some of these countries were also an issue.

The challenges facing development of the energy sector in Northern areas were discussed in a meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Gahr Støre and President of the Party of European Socialists, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.

“It’s crucial that we put this item on the agenda”, Gahr Støre said and stressed the point that the energy sector and the opportunities that lay in the Northern areas are of current interest in the European energy discussion, and that Norway, due to its geographical position og competence in the field, should be a leading country on this area of knowledge. 

The Minister also met with NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. In addition to this, he visited the EEA Grants Office, which is responsible for the coordination of the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

“It is important to make good use of the bilateral cooperation which these grants opens up to”, the Minister said after the visit.
