Haga defends Norwegian Regional Aid

The Norwegian Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Åslaug Haga, met with the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) in Brussels on 9 February to discuss the reintroduction of regionally differentiated social security contributions in Norway.

Minister Haga met with the President of ESA, Bjørn T. Grydeland, to present the Norwegian view on the European Commission’s Guidelines on National Regional Aid for 2007-2013.  ESA will issue corresponding guidelines that will apply to regional aid granted in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. These guidelines will make it possible to reintroduce a system of regionally differentiated social security contributions in Norway. The new Norwegian government gives high priority to the reintroduction of this important regional aid scheme.  ESA will as the competent authority decide on the notification of the scheme in the course of 2006.

The meeting with ESA was a follow-up of the meeting between Minister Haga, the Minister of Finance Kristin Halvorsen and the Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes in December 2005.
