Norway signed the European Charter of Mountain Quality Food Products

State Secretary Inge Bartnes from the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development participated in the signing of the European Charter of Mountain Quality Food Products in Brussels on 7 December.

09/12/2005 :: The European Charter of Mountain Quality Food Products is prepared by Euromontana, a European multisectoral association for cooperation and development of mountain territories. The aim of the charter is to join forces in order to promote sustainable development in mountain regions based on growth in economic activities.

“The cooperation strengthens the important work on promoting quality products from Norwegian mountain regions. Through the initiative, Norwegian producers can achieve access to  European networks, and thus be able to exchange experience and knowledge”, State Secretary Bartnes stated prior to the signing.

He also emphasized that the charter is of great importance to future-oriented agricultural and regional policy. On a longer term Euromontana aims to establish a label of origin and quality for mountain products. “This may strengthen the work to promote Norwegian quality products. A European label will serve as a supplement to long-established Norwegian labels and provide producers with a European marketing tool.  This entails that also Norwegian quality products may gain from this initative”, the Norwegian State Secretary concluded.
