Seminar: Maritime security – the potential for further cooperation between EU and NATO

Last updated: 17.09.2014 // The seminar will focus on the role of EU and NATO and the potential for further cooperation between the two organizations on this important subject.

The maritime domain and its security environment is complex, rapidly evolving and increasingly unpredictable. It has significant impact on global security and influences upon commerce, transportation and energy supply. Maritime security covers a wide range of issues and challenges, ranging from harbor safety to maritime warfare, which raises diverging concerns and requires very different solutions.

This autumn the EU and NATO are discussing maritime security and further development of their maritime strategies; the EU by developing an Action Plan as a follow-up to the Maritime Security Strategy endorsed by the General Affairs Council in June, and NATO by the endorsement by Heads of States and Governments of a report on operationalizing NATO’s “Alliance Maritime Strategy” from 2011.

Even if their strategies have different angles and partly serve different purposes, both the EU and NATO regard maritime security as an integral part of their area of responsibility and underline the need for strengthening relations with each other in the maritime domain.
