High North in Brussels

23/03/2012 // Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre was March 22 in Brussels to present the Norwegian High North Policy to a wide EU audience. On the lunch seminar “What future for the High North?” the Minister outlined Norway’s vision for the Arctic Region.

The High North is Norway’s most important strategic priority area. In November 2011 the Norwegian Government launched its High North Policy. You can read more about that here.

– We experience increasing international interest in the High North. There are three key drivers for this increased attention: climate change, access to resources and Russia, said the Minister. He was the key note speaker at the lunch seminar “What future for the High North? Norway’s Vision for the Arctic Region” organised by the European Policy Centre in cooperation with the Mission of Norway to the EU. MEP Michael Gahler (EPP, Germany) and David O’Sullivan from the EEAS will also take part in the policy dialogue. EPCs summary of the event can be found on their website.

In Brussels on March 22 Mr. Støre also had a meeting with energy commissiner Günther Oettinger and had an exchange of views with the foreign affairs committee in the European Parliament on the High North – including cooperation with Russia, energy and resources – the Arab Spring and developments in the Middle East. You can read the Minister’s speech in the European Parliament here.
