Global Security Dialogue with EU in Oslo

Last updated: 15.06.2016 // EU’s High Representative, Federica Mogherini, discussed EU’s new global strategy with Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister Børge Brende in Oslo.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, participated the Europe Conference 2016 in Oslo June 13., with Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister, Børge Brende.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with The Delegation of the European Union to Norway and the Nobel Peace Center arranged the conference, where Mogherini and Brende discussed EUs new global strategy for foreign and security strategy, “Common Challenges for Europe – A Strategy for Foreign and Security Policy”.

– Our vision for foreign policy is extremely close to Norway’s vision, and this is no surprise. We are like-minded partners, we share values and interests, and let alone history and geography. The discussion we had on our strategy has helped us realize how close we are, Mogherini said in her speech at the Nobel Peace Center.

Mogherini also called for a 21st century approach to security – An approach that is not limited to the military aspects of security.

– Our security today is an ever more tangled matter – complementarity is something we cannot do without. Treats are growing, in number and complexity, and today it is even more important to engage with all players in our region. To the south, to the east and to the High-North, Mogherini said.

Dialogue with the EU on foreign and security policy is becoming increasingly important for Norway. Norway has provided input to the EU global strategy, which foreign affairs minister Brende presented on the EU’s global strategy at the seminar «A New Global Strategy for the EU: A Northern Perspective» at Norway House in Brussels earlier this spring. In addition, a new white paper on Norwegian foreign and security policy will be submitted to the Storting in 2017.

Oslo Forum and meeting with Prime Minister Solberg

Mogherini participated in the Oslo Forum, together with Brende and the Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mohammad Javad. At the press conference after the meeting, Brende told the press that had an in-depth discussion on the situation in Syria and Iraq.

Mogherini also met with the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg.

– Norway is not only a like-minded country for us; it is a perfectly like-minded country. We work perfectly well together on so many issues that are important for Europe, no matter if it is European Union or non-European Union territory, because we are facing many challenges. We are also working on some opportunities, we have the same kind of approach, I would say even philosophy to investment into the resilience, the stability, the openness of societies, inside our continent, and outside in the world, Mogherini stated after her meeting with Solberg.
