Knut Arild Hareide, the Norwegian Minister of the Environment met with Pieter van Geel, the Dutch State Secretary for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment in the Hague on 7 October. Hareide and van Geel exchanged views on the co-operation between Norway and the EU in the environmental field.

A main topic was climate change policies, particularly the preparations for COP 10 in Buenos Aires later this year where policy actions beyond the Kyoto period are likely to be discussed. In order to create a common market for climate emissions trading Norway has proposed to link a Norwegian trading system to the EU scheme as from 1 January 2005.

In addition topics like the chemicals legislation (REACH), environmental technologies and measures to combat illegally logged tropical timber were discussed.
