Action against international roaming prices

Revision of the Telecom-package, international roaming prices, the roll out of broadband and the development of Digital Terrestrial Television, were the main issues discussed when Minister of Transport and Communications, Liv Signe Navarsete, met with the EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding, in Brussels 7 February 2006.

15/02/2006 :: On the question of international roaming prices for the use of mobile phones Minister Navarsete and Commissioner Reding agreed that measures have to be taken to reduce consumer costs. The Minister drew the attention to the problem of high consumer prices when calling from private mobiles abroad, and stressed the importance of cooperation across national borders to solve this problem.

Furthermore, the Minister said she would discuss the issue with her Nordic colleges in order to reach a common position. Reding agreed in Navarsete’s views and expressed discontent with the telecom companies which do not take into account the Commission’s clear signals on the issue.

On 24 February Minister Navarsete will visit Vienna to further discuss these and other issues with the Austrian Presidency of the European Union.
