Norway assists the EU in Lebanon

Norway is for the first time deploying an EU-coordinator for the Community Mechanism.

15/08/2006 ::
Mr. Petter Nuland, representing the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning, is currently deployed on a 10-days mission to Lebanon as an EU-coordinator to assess the situation and facilitate the coordination of EU-assistance operations. Norway is affiliated with the Community Mechanism through the EEA-agreement.

– The time from the request to my departure was very short, says Mr. Nuland. – Support from amongst others the Civil Defence, the police and the army, has made it possible to react so quickly. I think it will attract international attention that Norway can mobilise so quickly. After all, it is the first time we are participating in the framework of the Community Mechanism.
