Norway aligns with EU declaration on the referendum in Montenegro

Norway welcomes the successful referendum in Montenegro and has aligned itself with the EU Declaration that commends the Sunday referendum.

23/05/2006 :: The declaration was issued 23 May on behalf of the Council and the Presidency.

The referendum regarding the independence of Montenegro from Serbia was held on Sunday 21 May. The result was a small majority of 55,3 percent in favor of independence.

All the EU Member states, the Acceding Countries, the Candidate countries of the Stabilization and Association Process, the potential candidates Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EFTA countries Liechtenstein and Norway, as well as Ukraine and Moldova agree that the referendum was held in accordance to OSCE and Council of Europe commitments and in line with democratic principals. The declaration furthermore characterizes the referendum as a sign of maturity on behalf of the region.
