Norway launches portal

The Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Helga Pedersen launched the new portal at the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels 9 May.

10/05/2006 :: “This site is important for the openness and transparency of the fish sector. Civil society, consumers, importers and retailers all have an interest in how we manage our stocks, what regulations we apply, and what kind of standards we apply when it comes to the environment and to safe and healthy fish,” Helga Pedersen stated after officially opening the website in Brussels yesterday.

The portal contains facts and information in English about the state of the Norwegian commercial stocks, resource management and control, aquaculture, the marine environment and the work done to ensure that Norwegian seafood is safe for consumers.

The portal has been prepared and is edited by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in co-operation with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, the Directorate of Fisheries, the National Institute for Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES), and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. At present, more than 80 articles written by the relevant institutions are accessible at the site.

Export to the EU accounts for approximately 60% of the value of Norway’s total world export of about four billion Euros.
